The expectations for healthcare personnel are ones in which they demonstrate competence while working to achieve and maintain mastery in a variety of situations in which they are expected to display considerable skills in the areas of problem-solving, procedures, and decision-making. In order to ensure that these standards are being met and exceeded for the healthcare personnel here at MetroHeath, the MetroHealth Simulation Institute was created in 2012 and since then has rapidly grown.
MSI serves the needs of MetroHealth professionals throughout the system while providing a growing array of programs and course offerings to regional, national, and international audiences. As a regional leader in healthcare delivery and education, MetroHealth is recognized in many services and MSI enables learners to enhance their skills in their quest to provide outstanding care.
The MetroHealth Simulation Institute combines impressive tools and technology, robust education program design, and expert faculty and staff to provide participants with an opportunity to learn and refine all aspects of healthcare delivery and be evaluated in an efficient, standardized manner. MSI’s risk free environment incorporates all available simulation modalities; high fidelity computerized manikins, procedural task trainers, standardized patients, virtual/ augmented reality, and computer based micro simulations.

Special Disease Care Unit
The Special Disease Care Unit (SDCU) was created in 2015, as a part of a grant project in conjunction with Infection control, and ran until 2020.
MCarES Project
Medicaid Care Experience Simulation Project designed to educate Ohio’s Medicaid providers and other health care professionals in Ohio on key health issues impacting the state. The funding for this two year grant is through the Ohio Department of Medicaid.
COVID-19

Just as with every organization, the MetroHealth Simulation Institute, experienced many changes and limitations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. MSI programs were limited and adjustments had to be made in order for simulation learning to continue safely.

New protocols were created for the MetroHealth System as well as MSI. MSI had designed new COVID policies and procedures to remain safe and continue learning and training through simulation. MSI’s COVID-19 policies can be found in the Policies and Procedures Manual for the MetroHealth Simulation Institute, under Policy 23.

The MetroHealth Simulation Institute has had some previous experience in working with challenges associated with an infectious disease and COVID has served as another experience for MSI to adjust procedures to better accommodate these situations. New procedures and processes for healthcare personnel were created and MSI was able to help successfully adapt to these changes.
If another infectious disease creates similar difficulties for healthcare personnel and the community, MSI will have more experience in being prepared for these situations.
